Initiatives Toward the Realization of a Carbon-Neutral Society
– Demonstration of CO Capture from Exhaust Gas of a Beckenbach Lime Shaft Kiln –

Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation (Head Office: 1-3-26 Koyama, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President: Kenji Nagata; hereinafter “TNSC”), a Japanese industrial gas business company in the Nippon Sanso Holdings Group, conducted a demonstration test to capture CO contained in the exhaust gas of a UBE Beckenbach lime shaft kiln (hereinafter “Beckenbach kiln”) at the Hirui Plant of Ueda Lime Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Head Office: 3751 Akasaka-cho, Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture; President: Kazuo Ueda; hereinafter “Ueda Lime”). In this demonstration test—the first of its kind in Japan for a Beckenbach kiln—TNSC confirmed that CO can be captured with a purity of 98% or higher.
TNSC will actively promote the introduction of this system to various industrial furnaces in Japan, to reduce CO emissions and contribute to the realization of a carbon-neutral society.

1. Background of the Demonstration Test
TNSC launched a CO capture system in April 2023*1. This system targets new CO emission sources, other than those derived from fossil fuels, and was developed to capture CO generated as a by-product of thermal decomposition in the production of quicklime from lime kilns. Lime kilns emit large amounts of CO₂ during the high-temperature calcination of limestone, and reducing these emissions is a key challenge for decarbonization in the industrial sector. One solution to this problem is the capture of CO from exhaust gases. To advance such efforts, TNSC focused on the Beckenbach kiln, a type of lime shaft kiln, and conducted a demonstration test jointly with Ueda Lime to capture CO from their lime kiln.

2. Overview and Results of the Demonstration Test
In this demonstration test, part of the exhaust gas from the Beckenbach kiln was introduced into the TNSC’s CO capture system to verify its performance and optimize its operating conditions. As a result, TNSC confirmed that CO concentrated to 98% or higher can be stably and efficiently captured at a constant flow rate. Following the successful demonstration of CO capture from actual exhaust gas, TNSC will accelerate the studies and deployment toward the installation of commercial systems, contributing to decarbonization and the realization of a carbon-neutral society.
