System flow for hydrogen production from ammonia and scope of the commercialized system
1. Background of the Commercialization
As the Japanese government promotes the expansion of the supply and utilization of hydrogen and related substances
*1 toward achieving carbon neutrality by 2050, NSC has been engaged in development efforts with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions through environmentally-friendly products. As part of these efforts, NSC successfully conducted a demonstration test in 2024 for producing hydrogen for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) from ammonia
*2. Building on this achievement, NSC has now commercialized and commenced sales of its hydrogen purification system for ammonia cracking gas.
The system leverages technologies that NSC has cultivated over the years, and is capable of achieving hydrogen purity compliant with the hydrogen fuel standard for fuel cell vehicles (FCVs), which requires strict impurity control, namely “ISO 14687:2025 Grade D
*3.”
This enables the use of hydrogen not only for FCVs, but also across a wide range of applications.
*1 Refers to hydrogen as well as its derivatives, including ammonia, synthetic methane, and synthetic fuels
*2 Taiyo Nippon Sanso Corporation release (April 15, 2024):
Successful Demonstration Test of Hydrogen Production from Ammonia for Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs)
*3 Quality specifications for hydrogen for automotive PEM fuel cells
2. Product Specifications of the Hydrogen Purification System for Ammonia Cracking Gas
NSC has commercialized the following two product lineups.
